How To Write An Effective Welcome Email

Sep 01, 2021

Email marketing is one of my personal favorite tools AND most effective channels in my marketing mix. In terms of customer retention, there’s no greater tool at your disposal. Email has the capability to reach all returning and new customers in a personal way. With every email you send, your business has the opportunity to connect with customers on a deeper level.

The most important email you’ll send is the welcome email. Typically, a welcome email is sent after someone makes a purchase OR subscribes to your newsletter / blog etc.

Welcome emails vary in style and structure. Some are sent post-purchase, others are a series of onboarding emails after somebody subscribes to your newsletter or blog. Creating a strong welcome email sets the tone for the rest of your communication with customers. You want to thank your customer for engaging with your brand and offer them either “inside information” or a coupon code / discount for their next visit. This incentivizes your customer to return to your store or remain a subscriber. People like to feel “in the know” and that they are a valued customer. A welcome email is the first step in creating a positive relationship between you and your customer.

Here are a few tips to keep in mind when drafting your welcome email:

  • Send with a personalized message.
  • Ensure the email is sent within minutes of the transaction or subscription.
  • Use high-quality imagery and text to effectively communicate your brand.
  • Format with mobile users in mind.
  • Remind subscribers to remove you from spam or promotion folders.
  • Let subscribers change preferences easily.
  • Entice the reader to open with an engaging subject line.
