The cure for unfulfillment.

Jun 22, 2022

Do you have a day (or night) job that’s crushing your creativity and leaving you unfulfilled?

If you said yes, then it might be time for a change.

Over the past 7+ years, I’ve started three companies and grown them each to six figures (and numerous others for clients and partners).

And I didn’t start my companies with a ton of business acumen or education. I had a BFA in acting and a burning desire to free up my time so that I could pursue my interests and build a family.

I’ve learned a ton since then about how to start and scale businesses of various types, and what kinds of businesses are right for folks like you and me.

But, before we get into the top businesses for Entertainment Professionals, let’s talk about why you haven’t started your own business sooner.

Some people stick with an ordinary “9-5 job” for the security, health insurance, and benefits. Others go the “gig” route and freelance for a ton of companies, which can lead to burn out.

Over the years, I’ve discovered that most artists and aspiring entrepreneurs struggle with one of a few core issues that holds them back from starting their dream business:

STARVING ARTIST SYNDROME So many artists struggle for way too long because they feel like it’s their job, it’s their duty or calling as an artist to struggle. They don’t want to have a back-up plan because they’ve been taught that having one means you’ll give up and fail as an artist. I’m here to tell you this is NOT true. Having your own business and multiple passions and interests doesn’t mean that your artistic pursuits will fizzle out. Quite the opposite.

YOU LACK BUSINESS EXPERIENCE If you’ve never started a business before it can seem like an impossible task. I know because I’ve been there before and I remember the panic I felt when I decided to turn a hobby into my first real business. Just remember this: your passion qualifies you. The rest will come!

CLARITY Whether you have too many ideas, or none, clarity is key to success in business. Maybe you’ve been thinking about starting a business for a long time, but you’re just not sure what type of business or where to even start. You may have so many ideas floating around that it’s impossible to choose just one to focus on, and what if you choose wrong? Don’t panic. I’ve boiled it down to a few businesses that are proven to work specifically for entertainment professionals like you.

If any of these reasons resonate with you, then keep reading . . .

Starting any business includes an element of risk. But as an artist, you’re no stranger to taking risks and believing in yourself and your abilities. So, let's talk about a few businesses that you could start and the pros and potential cons of each one . . .

AN INFLUENCER BASED BUSINESS

  • Who this type of biz is right for: People who LOVE creating content to share on social media. Being an influencer can be a great business for entertainment professionals, especially if they already have a large social media following that they want to monetize. Check out my podcast episode "Life Lessons with Broadway's Big Sister" with @thebackstageblonde influencer Teale Dvornik about how she became an influencer to share her love of theater and experiences as a dresser.
  • How you get paid: Influencers are typically paid for sponsored content created for other brands. Some influencers also develop their own products to sell to their following.
  • Pros: It costs little to nothing to start this type of business. It can be fun for people who love to create and share content on social media.
  • Cons: It can be very difficult to gain a large, loyal, engaged audience on social media. It can also take up a ton of time creating content for your fans. Depending on how many followers you have, the range you can be paid varies widely for sponsored posts and paid partnerships. If you don’t already have a product of some sort to sell, then you’re limited to selling other people’s products or services.

A CONSULTING OR COACHING BUSINESS

  • Who this type of biz is right for: Consulting is a great type of business to start for anyone who is willing to trade their time for money, and usually a pretty decent sum. If you have expertise in a highly sought after field, such as business, marketing, fundraising, leadership, personal fitness (to name just a few), then you could be paid to consult or coach.
  • How you get paid: Consultants and coaches typically charge a flat hourly or day rate ranging from $50-$500+/hr.
  • Pros: This type of business costs very little to start since it’s just you and your expertise.
  • Cons: You are trading your time for money and it is not passive income. You have a limited amount of time, which means you have a growth cap to your business. It’s a very hands on type of business that requires a lot of client communication and management. You can’t sell your business down the line because you are the business.

A COURSE-BASED BUSINESS

  • Who this type of biz is right for: Starting a course-based business is right for almost anyone. All you need is passion and a certain level of expertise in a subject area that people want to learn about. As an Entertainment Professional, you’re likely sleeping on a ton of great course topics based on your life experience, education, certifications, and job experience!
  • How you get paid: Every time someone signs up for your course, you get paid! Most courses of a certain caliber cost $300-$1000 and offer a great way to make passive income.
  • Pros: Once created, courses are passive income! The online education space has a HUGE market with millions of people investing small and large sums in their continued education. Since a course is a product, you create it once and can sell it forever without a lot of additional work. We call this passive income caching! Anyone can teach a course as long as they know more than the audience they’re targeting and have a passion for the topic. And once you have course purchasers there’s a ton of potential for growth with introducing new courses and programs to your customers.
  • Cons: Creating the initial course content can be time consuming, but once it’s done you have a product to sell forever! There is some tech involved in setting up your online course.

Out of all my businesses, the course-based business model is my absolute favorite for Entertainment Professionals.
