Taking PRIDE In Your Work

Jun 12, 2023

Happy Pride Month!

I'm proud to be an LGBTQIA+ business owner and employer, and LOVE pride month for all the visibility it brings to our community. I feel the love :-)

But, this hasn't always been the case. I'll never forget when I worked on Wall Street as an assistant building manager for a huge high rise right out of college, and let's just say, being "out" was NOT the vibe.

No one at work knew I was gay, and for good reason. One time my boss off-handedly told me, "I'll never hire a gay person, because if they get hurt on the job they'll give everyone AIDS."

And that's just one reason why I strive to make my workplace one of inclusivity.

If you also find yourself somewhere under this beautiful rainbow, here are some tips to celebrate your journey and the positive impact you’re making on the business world:

1. Embrace Your Authenticity: One of the most empowering aspects of being an LGBTQIA+ Entrepreneur / Artist / Entertainment Pro is the ability to be your authentic self in your work. By embracing your identity, you set a positive example for others and create a welcoming environment for both employees and customers. Your authenticity becomes a powerful tool for building connections, attracting like-minded individuals, and creating a sense of belonging.

2. Celebrate Diversity and Inclusivity: Incorporating diversity and inclusivity into your business practices is crucial. Ensure that your workplace policies and culture are inclusive, respectful, and supportive of all employees, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Foster an environment where everyone feels valued, heard, and empowered to contribute their unique perspectives. Celebrate diversity in your marketing materials and outreach efforts to attract a broad customer base.

3. Be a Role Model: As an LGBTQIA+ Entrepreneur / Artist / Entertainment Pro, you have the opportunity to be a role model and advocate for the community. Share your story, challenges, and successes to inspire others and foster a sense of pride within the LGBTQIA+ community. Consider partnering with local LGBTQIA+ organizations or sponsoring LGBTQIA+ events to demonstrate your commitment to the community and create positive change.

4. Network and Collaborate: Connect with other LGBTQIA+ business owners and professionals to build a strong support network. Attend LGBTQIA+ networking events, join online communities, and collaborate with fellow Entrepreneurs / Artists / Entertainment Pros. By fostering these connections, you not only expand your professional circle but also create a space for sharing experiences, exchanging ideas, and uplifting one another.

5. Celebrate Milestones and Successes: Celebrate your milestones and successes as an LGBTQIA+ business owner. Take pride in the progress you've made, the challenges you've overcome, and the positive impact you've created. Share your achievements with your team, customers, and community, serving as a beacon of inspiration and empowerment.

I certainly don't claim to know everything about being a LGBTQIA+ Business Owner, however, I do know that it's important to take pride in your work. Know that you are making a significant impact and paving the way for future generations of LGBTQIA+ professionals.
