The Starving Artist Syndrome

May 04, 2021

We all have one . . . a money mindset. And it’s complicated and emotional and messy.

Your money mindset is your personal relationship with money and your set of beliefs and attitudes about cold hard cash.

Often our money mindset starts in childhood with how we grow up, how our parents make and spend money, the way our friends spend money . . . and even popular culture can play a role.

As artists, we’re taught to believe that money doesn’t matter, it’s about the art. We often romanticize the idea of the starving artist and act like if we don’t live the financial and emotional struggle that’s been fed to us by popular culture that we aren’t true artists . . .  maybe we’re even sell-outs.

Well, I’m here to burst your starving artist bubble. I’m just gonna say it . . . money matters.

Having it provides freedom, security, the ability to get many of the things that we want . . . and NOT having can cause stress, force us to take jobs we don’t want or put us in situations where we don’t have the choices we wish we had. I’ve been on both sides of the coin, and let me tell you, I prefer to have money.

But your money mindset also matters.

Some people believe that they’ll never have money and others act like it grows on trees. And they’re both right!

In fact, Ramsey Solutions conducted a study of over 10,000 millionaires (that’s so many millions!), and they found that 97% of millionaires believed that they could become millionaires before they made their millions.

Their mindset was one of success, of belief that it was within their control to make money. And that mindset is exactly what helped them make it happen.

What’s your money mindset? Do you feel like you deserve to be paid for your work? Is what you have to offer the world of value?

Or are you of the starving artist mindset and think people who want to make money are sell-outs? I suggest you change your tune or you could be stuck in the same struggle forever. It might be cute in your 20s, but you probably won’t feel that way when you want to retire.

So if you’re ready to make money so that you can find the freedom and stability that so many entertainment professionals lack (but deserve) . . . then set yourself a goal and believe it will come to fruition. Because it will.
