Have You Been Feeling “MEH” OR “BLAH?”

Apr 20, 2021

I was scrolling through Facebook, as one does at 5:15 in the morning, and I came across this New York Times article about “languishing.” It really struck a chord with me, because whenever I talk to my friends, colleagues, or family about how they are doing . . . like actually doing . . . they say something to the tune of “I’m fine, all things considered.” or “I’m just meh.”

For people who are usually non-stop and busy killing it in their careers, there is an overarching gloom that hangs over their heads. The aforementioned New York Times article linked HERE defines the word “languishing” as “the void between depression and flourishing — the absence of well-being.”

I feel like this term accurately depicts how I feel about the current state of the entertainment industry. It’s not thriving to the best of its ability, but thanks to virtual theater and experiences it’s not totally obsolete either . . . It’s . . . languishing . . .

It’s difficult to remain optimistic about the future when we have been existing in this limbo for over a year now. Yes, shows are beginning to pop up here and there, but without total infrastructure in place . . . I fear we may be languishing for a little while longer.

The times article shares tips and tricks to combat this feeling of “languish.” A concept called “Flow” is defined as “an elusive state of absorption in a meaningful challenge or a momentary bond, where your sense of time, place and self melts away.” The author mentions we experienced flow at the beginning of the pandemic when we really threw ourselves into work or creating new projects to avoid the feeling of languish. While committing to work or starting a project can be beneficial, it’s also important to set boundaries and goals that help you keep from feeling that sense of languish.

When I finished this article, first I shared it with a few friends who I knew would relate, because oh boy does it describe what we’re all going through, then I decided that I was going to focus on little victories and small wins throughout the day. Whether that’s reading a chapter of a book I’ve been meaning to get to . . . or simply brushing my hair . . . I need to celebrate the fact that I did those things.

Whether you are feeling bleh or meh in your personal or professional life, consider focusing on small wins.
